New Indiana Bill Cracks Down on College Athlete Prop Bets

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new bill at the Indiana Statehouse would crack down on proposition betting involving college athletes.

Senate Bill 120 would prohibit sportsbooks from accepting prop bets placed by college athletes on the sport they play. It would also fine athletes who try to place those bets--up to ten-thousand dollars per violation.

The bill was authored by State Senator Andy Zay of Huntington and is now headed to the Senate Public Policy Committee. A proposition bet is defined as a wager on a specific action or outcome within a game, not the final score.

The proposal follows a recent NCAA rule change allowing college athletes to bet on professional sports--but betting on college sports remains strictly off-limits.

Supporters say the bill is designed to protect the integrity of college athletics and prevent conflicts of interest as sports betting continues to expand statewide.
