(INDIANAPOLIS) - Thousands of crashes in Indiana work zones are prompting a renewed safety warning as construction season ramps up.
State data shows 6,773 crashes were recorded in work zones last year, resulting in 16 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries.
Transportation officials say speed and distracted driving are among the leading causes.
The numbers are being highlighted during National Work Zone Awareness Week, which marks the start of increased road work across the state.
INDOT is urging drivers to slow down, stay alert, and watch for crews and changing traffic patterns in construction zones.
