(MICHIGAN) - Hunters in Hillsdale and Branch counties are among those in 40 counties across Michigan's Lower Peninsula taking part in an extended late antlerless firearm deer season.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the special season began Friday and runs through January 11. The late hunt is open in select counties, including Hillsdale County and Branch County.

Tags for the extended season cost five dollars. Hunters may harvest up to 10 antlerless deer during the season, with one deer allowed per valid kill tag. Several license types are eligible for use, including unused single deer licenses, deer combo licenses, and universal antlerless deer licenses.

The late antlerless season is designed to help reduce deer populations, limit the spread of disease, reduce ecological damage, and lower the number of vehicle-deer crashes in the region.
