(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is reminding drivers that keeping slower-moving vehicles to the right on multi-lane highways is not just a courtesy -- it is the law.
The reminder comes as end-of-summer road trips and back-to-school travel increase traffic across the state.
The Indiana Driver's Manual states that slower vehicles should use the right lane on highways, leaving the left lane for faster-moving or passing vehicles.
The BMV says all motorists should follow posted speed limits unless road or vehicle conditions require slower travel. On highways, slower vehicles must remain in the right lane or lanes so the left lane remains open for faster traffic and safe passing.
The agency is also encouraging drivers to review the Indiana Driver's Manual for current guidance on lane changes, passing, interstate driving, speed limits and seat belt use.
