(LANSING) - Michigan transportation officials will temporarily lift lane restrictions on more than 100 road and bridge projects ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says the change is intended to ease traffic congestion during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Lane restrictions will be lifted on 106 of 179 active MDOT projects across the state. That covers nearly 60% of active Michigan construction sites.

The changes begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 2, and normal restrictions are scheduled to return at 6 a.m. Monday, July 6.

AAA estimates more than 2.6 million Michiganders will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday period.

Even with many lane restrictions lifted, some work zones may still remain active in a limited capacity.

MDOT says drivers may still see temporary lane shifts, shoulder closures and construction equipment near active work zones.

Drivers are urged to stay alert, slow down and use caution when traveling through construction areas during the holiday weekend.
