(JACKSON TOWNSHIP) – Family, friends and classmates are mourning the loss of 17-year-old Febie Booher following a crash Tuesday morning at the intersection of State Road 327 and County Road 350 North.
The Steuben County Sheriff's Office said deputies and emergency crews were called to the scene just before 7:20 a.m.
Investigators said Booher was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu on County Road 350 North when the vehicle entered the intersection and was struck by a northbound Ford F-150 driven by 36-year-old Jessica Gaetz of Orland.
Authorities said Gaetz braked and swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision but was unable to avoid striking the driver's side of the Malibu.
Emergency crews from Orland Fire Rescue and Steuben County EMS immediately began lifesaving efforts, but Booher died at the scene.
Booher was known throughout the community as a standout softball player and talented photographer.
Gaetz was transported to Cameron Hospital with minor injuries, including a possible broken wrist.
Investigators said Booher was not wearing a seatbelt. Gaetz was wearing a seatbelt, and airbags deployed in both vehicles.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
A Booher family spokeswoman tells WLKI News that, in lieu of flowers, monetary donations in memory of Febie Booher may be made at any ProFed Credit Union location.
