(FARMERSBURG) - Indiana has some of the best road conditions in the country, according to a new study from Construction Coverage.

The study found Indiana ranks third nationally for roadway quality, behind only Wyoming and Kansas.

Researchers analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration and found that only 4.1 percent of Indiana's major roadways are in poor condition. Another 23.9 percent were rated in fair condition, while 72 percent were classified as being in good condition.

The study comes as states continue to benefit from increased infrastructure spending following the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed into law in 2021. The legislation dedicated $110 billion to repairing and updating roads and bridges while supporting major transportation projects across the country.

According to the report, annual road construction spending has increased to approximately $150 billion nationwide, a rise of about 25 percent.

Nationally, about 13.1 percent of major roadways are considered to be in poor condition. Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York ranked among the states with the worst roadway quality.

The study also found Indiana drivers travel an average of 34.8 vehicle-miles per day, compared to the national average of approximately 26.5 miles.

Among neighboring states, Kentucky ranked 14th, Michigan ranked 29th, Ohio ranked 32nd and Illinois ranked 36th.

According to the study, 16.5 percent of Illinois roadways and 14.4 percent of Ohio roadways were classified as being in poor condition, both above the national average.
