(MICHIGAN CITY) - Google has confirmed plans to develop a major data center project in Michigan City.

WNDU-TV reports the company is acquiring the site known as "Project Maize," located at a former industrial facility on Royal Road, marking another expansion of its data center footprint in northern Indiana.

The project is expected to total more than $800 million, with redevelopment focused on a long-vacant manufacturing site that has been unused for more than a decade.

Google officials say the company plans to cover the full cost of power and infrastructure tied to the site and is positioning the project as a long-term investment in the region.

Local leaders have pointed to the potential for job creation and increased tax revenue, while also noting ongoing discussions about how the project will be built and staffed.

The development adds to Google's growing presence in Indiana, including its existing data center operations in Fort Wayne.
