(MERRILLVILLE) - NIPSCO customers who are behind on their bills now have until May 15 to seek payment help or make arrangements before residential shutoffs for nonpayment can resume.

The utility says no residential disconnections will take place before that date, effectively extending the current protection window for customers facing rising energy costs.

The key deadline is May 15, giving customers roughly six more weeks to apply for financial assistance, set up payment plans or otherwise resolve overdue balances.

After that date, customers who have not made arrangements could once again face service disconnection for nonpayment.

NIPSCO is directing customers who need help to its financial support and payment assistance programs, which include options tailored to individual household situations.

For customers struggling with rising bills, the message is straightforward: act before May 15 to avoid losing service.
