(LIMA) - Google has been identified as the company behind a massive $500 million data center project planned for northwest Ohio.

The facility is expected to be built on more than 200 acres in American Township near Lima. The project had previously been referenced only by a code name while details were being finalized.

Local leaders say the data center will support a wide range of digital services, including technology, health care systems and business operations. It would mark Google's third data center operation in Ohio.

Economic development officials expect significant short-term impact during construction, with increased demand for lodging, dining and other local services. Long-term growth is also anticipated as related businesses look to locate near the site.

Plans include roughly $50 million in infrastructure improvements, with roadway upgrades and new roundabouts expected to handle increased traffic.

The project is still under regulatory review. State environmental officials are considering a draft air permit that would allow the use of more than 100 diesel-powered generators and related equipment.

Public comments on the proposal are being accepted through mid-March, with more details expected as planning moves forward.
