(YPSILANTI) - State lawmakers are raising alarm over conditions inside Michigan's only women's prison after an inmate died from a treatable infection, prompting renewed scrutiny of safety and medical care at the facility.

During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Rep. Laurie Pohutsky said she observed black spots in shower seams during a February visit to the Huron Valley Correctional Facility. According to the lawmaker, prison officials attributed the spots to paint rather than mold, but concerns remain about ventilation and air quality.

A Michigan Department of Corrections report cited maintenance issues, including failing air circulation equipment. Critics argue poor ventilation and possible mold exposure could be contributing to health problems among inmates and staff.

The hearing follows the death of 54-year-old inmate Jennifer Jean Wallace, who died of sepsis from a Haemophilus infection while in custody. Reports indicate she received incorrect medication and experienced delays in treatment, and her family has questioned whether untreated dental issues played a role.

Former employee Laresha Thornton testified she developed a chronic inflammatory condition she believes was caused by mold exposure. Complaints about mold at the prison date back years, including a 2023 test that reportedly found multiple species of black mold.

The facility houses about 1,800 women and has faced previous allegations involving unsafe living conditions, sexual abuse, invasive searches and inadequate medical care. Lawmakers from both parties said the state has a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of people in its custody.

The Michigan Department of Corrections has not publicly responded to the latest allegations.
