(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana lawmakers have sent a sweeping immigration enforcement bill to Governor Mike Braun after final approval in the Senate.

Senate Bill 76 would require local governments and public agencies to cooperate with federal immigration detainer requests, allowing authorities to hold individuals for up to 48 hours beyond their scheduled release so federal agents can take custody.

The measure also empowers the Indiana attorney general to sue cities, counties and universities for up to $10,000 per violation if they limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, including through unwritten policies.

Businesses would be prohibited from knowingly employing unauthorized workers. Companies found in violation could face lawsuits and possible suspension or revocation of their operating authorization, though employers using federal verification systems would have legal protections.

Supporters say the bill strengthens border enforcement and public safety. Opponents warn it could lead to racial profiling, strain local resources and harm industries that rely on immigrant labor.

The legislation now awaits the governor's signature.
