Indiana DNR Warns Warming Temps Making Ice Dangerous

(FORT WAYNE) - Indiana conservation officers are warning residents to stay off lakes and rivers as warmer weather quickly weakens ice across the region.

With temperatures expected to climb into the 60s, officials say ice that appears solid can deteriorate rapidly and become unsafe without warning. The Department of Natural Resources recommends at least four inches of clear ice for foot traffic on still water, but stresses thickness can vary widely even on the same body of water.

Rivers are especially dangerous because moving water prevents consistent freezing. Officers say reports of people -- including children -- walking onto the St. Marys River are particularly concerning due to unpredictable conditions.

Falling through ice can trigger an immediate gasp reflex and cold shock, making self-rescue difficult. Officials urge anyone who ventures onto ice to check thickness near shore, wear flotation gear, use traction cleats, go with a partner, and inform someone of their plans.

As winter fades, authorities say the safest option is to avoid the ice altogether unless conditions have been carefully verified.
