(INDIANAPOLIS) -- Democrats are running candidates in a record number of Indiana Statehouse races this year, following the close of the filing deadline for the May primary election.

WANE-TV reports at least one Democratic candidate is on the ballot in all 25 Indiana State Senate seats up for election in 2026. Democrats are also contesting 91 of the state's 100 House districts.

The Indiana Democratic Party says this marks the first time since 1974 that Democrats have fielded candidates in every Senate race during a single election cycle. It is also the largest number of contested House races for the party since at least 1992, when the Indiana General Assembly eliminated multi-member districts.

Candidate filing closed Friday, locking in the field for the upcoming primary. Party leaders say the expanded slate reflects increased efforts to compete statewide and challenge Republican dominance in the legislature.

The Indiana General Assembly has been under Republican control for more than a decade, with the GOP currently holding supermajorities in both chambers.
