(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hoosiers planning to fly soon may want to check their driver's license before heading to the airport.
Starting Feb. 1, travelers who do not have a Real ID or another TSA-approved form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, will be required to complete additional identity screening under the TSA's new ConfirmID program. That screening comes with a $45 fee and is only valid for 10 days.
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles says travelers with a Real ID can avoid the ConfirmID process entirely.
About 85 percent of valid Indiana licenses and ID cards are already Real ID compliant, but the remaining 15 percent of Hoosiers could face extra screening and costs if they fly without upgrading. Real ID credentials are marked with a star in the upper-right corner.
To obtain a Real ID, residents must visit a BMV branch in person and provide documents verifying identity, lawful status, Social Security number and Indiana residency. A full list of acceptable documents is available on the BMV's website.
State officials say the Real ID not only meets federal travel requirements but also offers a simpler, one-time solution compared to paying repeated TSA fees.
Branch locations, hours and Real ID information are available at IN.gov/BMV.
