(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Some canned tuna products previously recalled over botulism concerns were mistakenly shipped to retail stores in several states, prompting a renewed warning from federal health officials.

According to reporting from CNN Newsource, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said a third-party distributor accidentally sent quarantined cases of Genova yellowfin tuna in olive oil and extra virgin olive oil to stores despite the recall remaining in effect.

The recalled tuna was shipped to Meijer locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Additional shipments went to Giant Foods stores in Maryland and Virginia, as well as Safeway, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions locations in California.

The tuna was originally recalled due to potential botulism contamination, a rare but serious foodborne illness that can cause paralysis and can be life-threatening.

Federal officials stress that consumers should not eat the recalled products under any circumstances. Anyone who has purchased the affected tuna is advised to dispose of it immediately, return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly to request a replacement product.

The FDA said no illnesses have been reported in connection with the mistakenly shipped cans but urged consumers to check their pantries carefully and take action if they have the recalled items.
