(COLDWATER) - A Quincy couple already facing numerous criminal charges could soon face life in prison, according to the Branch County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor Zack Stempien said Wednesday he plans to file four counts of first-degree child abuse against Matthew Boatrite, 34, and his wife, Cassandra Boatrite, 32. Stempien described the alleged conduct as "monstrous" during a court appearance, according to the Coldwater Daily Reporter.

The couple appeared before a judge as their attorneys requested more time to prepare for a preliminary hearing. Stempien said the new charges, which carry a potential life sentence, will be formally filed by the end of the week.

The allegations involve the couple's seven biological and foster children and stem from the same investigation that led to charges filed in December. Those earlier charges included multiple counts of second-degree child abuse, strangulation, assault with a weapon, and domestic violence.

Authorities allege the abuse occurred over an extended period and involved severe physical punishment. All seven children have been removed from the home and are receiving care through Michigan Child Protective Services.

Both defendants remain jailed on $200,000 bond each and are under strict no-contact orders with the alleged victims and with minors.
