March 2021 Jobless Rates Mixed Around SW Michigan

LANSING – Jobless rates were mixed slightly in Southwest Michigan from
February to March.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget released the
March data, which shows St. Joseph County had a drop in unemployment from 5.2 percent to 4.9 percent. That's a decrease of three-tenths of a percent. The largest drop in the area was in Cass County, going from 5.6 to 5.2 percent, a drop of four-tenths of a percent.

Branch County went up one-tenth of a percent from 4.9 to an even 5 percent. Hillsdale County remained at 5.4 percent from February to March. Statewide, the unemployment rate in Michigan was at 5.2 percent, up from 5.1 percent in February. That's up from March of 2020 when the unemployment rate was 4.5 percent.

Wayne Rourke, Associate Director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives says non farm job levels advanced modestly in nearly all Michigan metro areas over the month.
