The Trine University women's basketball team captured its fifth-straight victory, and have now won 11 of its last 13 games, with a 54-39 win against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association foe Adrian (Mich.) College in Adrian, Mich.

Junior Shay Herbert (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) recorded her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and a game-tying high 10 rebounds. She scored her 10 points on 50.0 percent shooting (five-of-10) and nine of her rebounds came on the defensive glass. Senior Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) led all players in scoring with a game-high 14 points while shooting 45.5 percent (five-of-11) from the floor.

Trine (13-4, 7-1 MIAA) never trailed in the game which began with back-to-back layups by Steers on the way to the Thunder taking an 8-2 advantage at the 6:45 mark following a pair of free-throws by sophomore Kelsy Taylor (Louisville, Ky./New Albany). After an ensuing three-pointer by Adrian (7-9, 1-6 MIAA), Trine scored eight unanswered points that included a triple and two free-throws by Steers during the run, to make it an 11-point margin, 16-5, with just over three minutes to go in the first quarter. A layup by the Bulldogs narrowed the gap back to single figures, but Trine got the final basket of the period on a layup by freshman Sam Underhill (Grand

Rapids, Mich./Northview) to equal the 11-point lead, 18-7, heading into period number two.

Herbert added to the Thunder lead with a layup to begin the scoring and put Trine ahead by 13 points, 20-7, early in the second quarter. Trine matched its largest lead of the first half two more times in the quarter, including a 26-13 margin after a layup by Steers with 4:37 to go before the break. Adrian got as close as nine points two times before the end of the half, but one of two free-throws by sophomore Kayla Wildman (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) extended the Trine lead back to double-digits with a halftime score of 30-20.

Trine outscored Adrian, 10-4, in the first 7:17 of the third quarter and posted its largest lead of the game of 16 points, 40-24, after a pair of freebies by Underhill at the 2:43 mark. The Bulldogs pulled to within 11 points late in the quarter, 41-30, but a free-throw by sophomore Rachel Stewart (Pekin, Ind./Eastern) ended the scoring by both teams and made it a 12-point game, 42-30, after three quarters.

Adrian looked to make a run early in the fourth quarter by scoring seven straight points and cut the deficit to single figures, 45-37, with 7:29 to play. A three-point play by Herbert, followed by a free-throw by sophomore Tara Bieniewicz (Chesterfield, Mich./Dakota), put the Thunder back out ahead by a more comfortable 12-point margin, 49-37, with under five minutes remaining. Trine's lead never dropped below the double-digit mark the rest of the game that included scoring the final five points of the contest as the Thunder went on to claim the 15-point victory by a final of 54-39.

Trine will next travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a MIAA matchup against Kalamazoo College on Saturday, Jan. 25. The two teams are set to tip-off at 3 p.m.
