An elderly woman died Wednesday night after a crash involving two vehicles. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department it happened around 6:45 p.m. at County Road 16 and IN-427 near Waterloo.

Investigators say 88-year-old Phyllis Reardon of Auburn was on County Road 16, near Waterloo, when she failed to heed the stop sign at the intersection of Indiana 427. Reardon then T-boned a pickup, driven by John Bassett, age 40 of Butler.

Reports indicate that the impact sent Bassett’s vehicle careening off the roadway. Reardon's SUV spun around and came to a stop in the middle of the road, according to police.

Both vehicles were totaled.

Bassett was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital by helicopter for treatment. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, he was later listed in stable condition.

Reardon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The DeKalb Co. Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Waterloo Marshall’s Department, Indiana State Police, DeKalb EMS, Steuben EMS, Butler Fire Department, and the DeKalb Coroner’s Department.
