Wind Speed a Factor for Angola Balloons Aloft
By Sheila McCrea

"Lifting Our Community to New Heights" is the theme for Angola Balloons Aloft, which is being held Friday and Saturday at Angola High School.

Organizers say that wind speed is a factor as to when, and if, balloons can fly. Competitions ballooons cannot fly if wind speeds are greater that 10 mph. Balloons that are special shaped, such as Peg Leg Pete (a parrot shaped balloon) cannot fly in speeds greater than 7 mph.

The annual event features food and vendors both Friday and Saturday. A special kids fun zone will be available Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Opening ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. Friday night. A mass balloon launch will follow starting at 7 p.m.

Even more events are scheduled throughout the day on Saturday starting at 7 a.m. One last competitive flight will also happen on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

This year organizers with Angola Balloons Aloft have created a text alert system so members of the public can stay informed on updates about the event. If you want to receive text alerts, text 797979 with the message "balloons" to receive alerts.
