(DeKalb County, IN) - Joshua D. Mumma, the man accused of shooting DeKalb County Sheriff Deputy Todd McCormick following a traffic stop in Garrett back on April 10th of this year, has been released from a Fort Wayne hospital and is now in police custody.

The Indiana State Police investigation into this incident revealed that McCormick had stopped Mumma for equipment violations on his vehicle. During the course of the traffic stop, McCormick ran his K-9 partner around the exterior of Mumma’s vehicle. A positive alert was made and Mumma was asked to exit the vehicle, which he refused to do.

When McCormick opened the door to assist Mumma in exiting the vehicle, a physical altercation ensued inside the car. It is alleged that Mumma pulled a .38 caliber handgun and pointed it at McCormick, who then drew his duty sidearm. Multiple shots were fired from Mumma’s handgun before the fight continued outside the car and onto the ground. It is further alleged that Mumma pointed his gun at Garrett Police Officer Alicia Castro and pulled the trigger, but a round was not fired.

The fight for both Mumma and McCormick’s handguns continued until Castro shot Mumma with her duty sidearm and McCormick shot him with the. 38 caliber. McCormick sustained severe wounds to both of his hands, and Mumma was hospitalized for the wounds he sustained. Castro was not injured. Further investigation uncovered more than 30 grams of methamphetamine inside of Mumma’s vehicle.

The actions of both McCormick and Castro were deemed reasonable by DeKalb County Prosecutor and no charges were brought against them. Both have since returned to work, with McCormick in more of a limited capacity as he continues to recover from his wounds.

Upon his hospital release, Mumma was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on multiple charges.
