McCray Building Fire Update
Monday Jun 04, 2018 11:31am
Kendallville, IN

For a while overnight, fire rained on downtown Kendallville.

Winds blew flaming embers from the abandoned McCray Refrigeration plant over the historic downtown district.

Quick response from Kendallville fire fighters and thirteen other departments kept the fire contained and no injuries occurred.

The fire call came in just before 2:30 a-m and Kendallville Fire Chief Mike Riehm says he immediately called for mutual aid. Departments from Noble, DeKalb, LaGrange, Steuben and Allen Counties made the scene.

The fire was brought under control in about four hours.

Riehm said the southeast portion of the building had the greatest amount of fire, which came through the roof.

The fire chief said the remaining walls are unstable and will be knocked down to make the fire scene safe to be around once hot spots are extinguished.

The state fire marshal along with Kendallville Police detectives and fire personnel are investigating the cause of the fire.

Police closed off all of downtown but Riehm said he expected it to re-open to traffic by around noon today.
