The Branch County Humane Society is helping a neighboring county house animals seized from a home in January.

According to WWMT, Branch County took in 29 dogs of the over 200 found at a home in Lenawee County's Rome Township. The Lenawee County Sheriff's Department says Sharon Evans was running a kennel out of her home which was overcrowded and in inhumane conditions.

Officials reached out to shelters in Branch, Lenawee, Jackson and Monroe Counties to see if they could take in the dogs, along with five cats, 32 horses and 2 peacocks taken from the home.

Jan Nageldinger of the Branch County Humane Society says they only have 28 kennels so they have had to double up some dogs. They have been working to get the dogs healthy and used to being around people. Nageldinger says she is confident they will find homes for all of the dogs.

Sharon Evans is charged with animal abandoning and cruelty to 10 or more animals. That is a four year felony in Michigan.

Lenawee County authorities received a complaint about Evans and started an investigation in December. Police searched the property on January 3 and removed the animals from the residence, which had no shelter and water for them.
