New DNR Officers Assigned To SW Michigan
Thursday Jan 04, 2018 3:24am
Albion, IN

By: Mike Stiles

Four new Department of Natural Resources officers are being assigned to counties in Southwest Michigan.

Twenty-two men and women recently graduated from the Michigan DNR Conservation Officer Recruit School after completing a rigorous, 23 week course. The 16 men and 6 women will now be sent to several counties around the State as probationary officers.

Kyle McQueer and Jeremy Cantrell will be assigned to St. Joseph County, while Nicholas Wellman has been assigned to Branch County and Micah Hintze will be in Cass County.

In addition to general law enforcement training, the recruits must learn skills unique to a conservation officer's duties such as fish and game identification. They also receive training in areas including precision driving, self-defense tactics, water safety, legal training, outdoor survival, firearms and first aid.

The Michigan DNR currently has 209 sworn conservation officers. If all 22 of the recent graduates complete their probationary periods, that total will stand at 231 officers.
