Hunter Sustains Injuries After Tree Stand Fall
Sunday Oct 01, 2017 2:04pm
Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area • Orland, IN

By: Sheila McCrea

Indiana Conservation Officers investigated a tree stand fall in Steuben County on opening morning of deer season.

The incident occurred at 7 a.m. Sunday morning in the Steuben County portion of the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area.

The initial call came to the Lagrange County Communications who received a 9-1-1 saying a deer hunter had fallen out of his tree stand. Reports indicate that two nearby archery hunters heard someone yelling and followed the voice to where 33-year-old Brent Chester of Albion IN was laying injured at the bottom of the tree where his tree stand was located.

The two hunters called 9-1-1. Indiana Conservation Officer Jake Carlile was the first on scene and the two hunters were able to direct him to Chester’s location in the woods. Carlile rendered first aid until EMS arrived.

Orland Fire & Rescue personnel also responded at the same time as they were also on the scene of a structure fire.

Indiana Conservation Officers said that Chester fell approximately 16 feet from a ladder tree stand, sustaining internal injuries. He was not wearing a safety harness.

Steuben County EMS transferred him to Parkview Samaritan Helicopter, which was waiting nearby on the campus of Prairie Heights Community Schools, where Mongo Volunteer Fire Department had set up a landing zone for a helicopter.

He was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

Assisting Indiana Conservation Officers at the scene were Orland Fire Department, Mongo Fire Department, Steuben County EMS, Parkview EMS, and Parkview Samaritan Helicopter.
