Brown Urges DOJ to Help Protect Law Enforcement from Deadly Drug Contact
Friday May 19, 2017 7:36pm

By: Tanner Holbrook

U-S Senator Sherrod Brown wrote a letter to the Department of Justice asking them to speed up distribution of federal funding for a program that would train first-responders as they deal with opioid related incidents. This program called the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Grant or COAG is part of legislation called the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, which congress approved last year. The grant also would allow police departments the funding to equip officers with the necessary protective gear.

This letter comes after one East Liverpool, Ohio police officer accidentally overdosed after coming into contact with the drug fentanyl after an arrest.

In his letter, Brown thanks the DOJ for their work in the program so far but he also says quote “I write to encourage the continued expeditious administration of the COAG program, so that we can get vital resources into our communities…”

Brown also goes on to say in his letter that the incident of the officer in Ohio serves as a very real example of the Opioid crisis law enforcement agents deal with.
