A car accident Friday night has claimed the life of an Ohio man.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, a vehicle driven by John Vanhorn, age 61 of Hicksville, Ohio was traveling northbound in the 900 block of County Road 39 in Waterloo. Authorities say Vanhorn passed another vehicle in a no passing zone just before a curve. Upon regaining the driving lane after making the pass, Vanhorn crossed the fog line and entered the gravel shoulder. He lost control of his vehicle, rolling multiple times.

The vehicle came to a rest in a field about 784 feet from the roadway. Vanhorn was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt and died on scene as a result of his injuries.

A front seat passenger wearing a safety belt, 37-year-old Arin Vanhorn, also of Hicksville, was able to get out of the vehicle. Arin Vanhorn complained of back and chest pain, and was taken from the scene by DeKalb County EMS for treatment.

Investigators say speed and alcohol are believed to be a factor in the crash.

Assisting the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department was the Waterloo amd Ashley Police Department, Indiana State Police, Parkview DeKalb EMS, and the Ashley-Hudson Fire Department.
