Phone Scam Targeting Social Security
Monday, September 30, 2019

A new phone scam is targeting people on Social Security.

In this scam, the caller claims to be from the Social Security Administration and says your benefits will be suspended, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

The person will then be prompted to hit ‘1’ on their phone if they believe it is a mistake. Victims of this are told to not press "1" according to the FTC as the pressing of the number 1 will result in being directed to a scammer who will ask for money and personal information.

The Social Security Administration reports that it will never call you to request money or threaten to take away your benefits.

Anyone receiving one of these calls are asked to hang up and report it to the SSA’s Office of the Inspector General or the FTC immediately.
