U.S. & China Trade War Hitting Close To Home
Monday, September 23, 2019

The on-going economic dispute between the United States and China starting to hit close to home, as manufacturers in Indiana are feeling it more than most as the Hoosier State is the nation’s top manufacturing state.

The economic war between the world’s two largest economies began back in July, 2018 when the U.S. imposed a tariff on certain Chinese imports. Since the tariffs were put in place, both countries have raised tariffs worth billions of dollars on each other’s imports.

All of this now has American businesses stuck in the cross hairs of the trade war, and the impact is especially pronounced in Indiana where the state leads the country in manufacturing, which accounted for 28.6% of its gross state product in 2017, according to the National Association of Manufacturers. That same year, 17% of Indiana’s jobs were manufacturing-related, also the nation’s highest.

With prices of Indiana made products continuing to rise, some of the extra cost has fallen on its customers, while various companies were forced to absorb the remainder which is cutting into profit margins among the businesses across the state.

The United States and China are expected to negotiate next month, with another round of tariff increases expected to be put in place by President Trump on December 15th, a move China says it is ready to retaliate on.
